PORTO, Portugal — Surfing is often seen as a sport, but for some, it is much more than that.

They see surfing as a lifestyle, a spiritual practice, and a path toward a deeper connection.

A Brazilian pastor and long-time surfer has found a unique way to unite his passion with his purpose of faith.

What happens when the church meets the ocean?

This is not a traditional Sunday service. On the beaches of Porto, a group of passionate surfers is building a unique faith community — a church that worships God among the waves.

Waves of Faith

As I sat at my parents table one Sunday morning, my mom slid over to me an article from the Orange County Register. The section was enttiled Faith, a section I don’t often frequent but on this day, this section had a little bit more of a meaning.

It is also home to a different kind of church — located along the Atlantic coast, near a fishing village known for some of the largest waves in the world.

Porto is proud of its beaches, its churches covered in blue and white tiles, and the famous Port wine, which gives its name to the city in northern Portugal.

“It’s an important part of spirituality to be connected to something bigger. In our case, it’s God, but it can also be the ocean,” she said after a Sunday service she attended with her Portuguese boyfriend, who is also a surfer. “That’s what makes surfing a spiritual experience.”

Surf Church making waves in Portugal

“We would like to see this church reproduce itself in more and more communities of Jesus followers.”

Surf Church, between the sea and the sky

They like to read the Bible and spend their afternoons catching waves. This intercultural group of Christians who are also surfers was born from a “Jesus-incidence.”

“Surfing the ocean waves is a lifestyle and can become a spiritual practice and a path toward a deeper connection…”

There is already a Surf Church in Porto, and the goal is to expand along the entire Portuguese coast.
